McLane Carter knows what it is like to be involved in a shootout.

So does Manny Harris, and on Thursday, the two strong-armed quarterbacks went back and forth, but the battle did not take place on a field. Rather, the two racked up votes like passing yards as they competed for the title of KDHpressbox.com Player of the Week.

Following a furious flurry of activity to conclude the final day of voting, Salado’s junior quarterback narrowly emerged as the winner, receiving 48 percent of the 1,829 total votes cast to beat Harris by 30 votes. Earlier in the day, a handful of votes separated the pair before each received more than 200 votes in the final few hours.

The race was one of the closest and yielded one of the highest turnouts in recent history, and the outcome serves as a consolation prize of sorts for Carter, who found himself on the wrong end of a memorable matchup between two high-powered offenses last week.

Carter completed 35 of 56 passes for 613 yards and eight touchdowns, but it was not enough to beat the Leopards, who scored a decisive touchdown with 2 minutes, 15 seconds remaining to beat Salado 75-67.

Harris, a junior in his debut season with Copperas Cove, solidly established himself as the Bulldawgs’ quarterback by throwing for a school-record 516 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-41 season-opening loss to A&M Consolidated.

He followed up the milestone performance by completing 26 of 41 passes for 336 yards and five touchdowns in a 70-24 win at Waco.

While the showing helped his team earn a blowout victory, it was not quite enough to win online as he earned 46 percent of the vote in this week’s poll.

Florence running back Lendell Freeman finished third after guiding the Buffaloes to a 23-0 shutout victory over Thrall at Waxahachie last Saturday. The junior ran for a team-high 115 yards on 12 carries for a 9.58 yard-per-carry average with touchdown runs of eight and 71 yards.

Another standout quarterback rounded out the field.

In a lopsided 48-20 win against former Mexico national champion Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Shoemaker senior Ziere Banner completed 11 passes en route to 146 yards and two touchdowns, while also running the ball 23 times for 194 yards and two scores.
