The play started small. And then it got big, real big.

Killeen wide receiver Eric Jackson hauled in Garrett Gaskamp’s throw and darted from the right side of the field to the left.

Sixty-six yards later he had scored the game winning touchdown with 45 seconds left in Killeen’s 33-28 come-from-behind win over New Braunfels Canyon on the bright red field of Cougar Stadium.

It was one of the biggest plays Killeen quarterback Garrett Gaskamp has made as a starter.

But, it is just one of a solid performance against the Cougars.

“I think the experience he had from last year was a huge advantage,” said Killeen coach Sam Jones. “He kept is cool, delivered good passes and all of that comes from experience.”

The junior quarterback was 16-of-22 passing for 241 yards and two touchdowns, including the 66-yard game winner to Jackson as the Roos defeated Canyon.

“I think I did OK,” Gaskamp said. “I am eager to play again this week and I think it did a good job of getting my team pumped.”

For the performance, Gaskamp was named the KDHpressbox.com Player of the Week for Aug. 26 - Sept. 1, collecting 300 of the 382 votes in the poll. Gaskamp credited his defense for allowing him and the offense the last-second chance to score and win the game.

“Most definitely our defense stepped up for us,” he said. “They stopped them and then we finally executed and it all came together on that last drive.”

Gaskamp was more happy with the win over a 5A team, though.

“It is big. It is already getting us ready for our next game and proved we can play against a 5A team. It is something big.”

His coach just wants him to keep making big plays.

“He has the talent,” Jones said. “He just has to keep getting better ... We expect a lot from him and he has to just keep delivering.”

Others nominated were Temple senior quarterback Zach Allen, who was 13-of-25 passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-24 win over Round Rock.

He also ran 11 times for 90 yards and two scores and Copperas Cove running back Vondareaz King, who ran for 250 yards and a touchdown in a 31-20 loss to A&M Consolidated.

Gatesville’s Cole Edmiston was also nominated.

The senior quarterback was 10-of-20 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 25 yards and a score in the Hornets’ 41-9 win over Waco Reicher.
