Salado junior Sarah Kate Kelarek won the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week award.
The Lady Eagles 5-foot-5 guard scored 21 points in Salado’s 50-48 win over Llano which clinched a playoff berth.
“Sarah Kate played a great game against Llano,” said Salado head coach Diane Konarik. “In the first half, we were down and she only had about three points.
“In the second half, she changed the whole complexity of the game. We ran some good plays for her. We set up some high-low mismatches. She can post up so I had her post up down low against a guard who couldn’t defend her. Then, after they switched defenders on her with a taller player, we moved her back up to the perimeter and she drove by or dished it off when she got double-teamed. She led us to that win.”
Salado was eliminated this week in Round 1 of the postseason.
“But at least we were in the playoffs and that was very important to us,” Konarik said. “We were still playing when the regular season ended — and Sarah Kate was the engine of our team.
“She is the one who drove us. When she’s in the game, we got going. If she was on the bench with foul trouble, our team morale would go down. She was one of our team captains and that was due to the team voting for her. She is very skilled. She’s intimidating when she plays defense. She’s so long. She has a wide wing span.”
Also nominated for the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week award were Shoemaker’s Devyn Brewton, Harker Heights Kendal Little, Lometa’s Kyle Molter and Salado soccer player Costas Loullis.
“I’m proud of Sarah Kate for winning this award,” Konarik said. “She is a very hard worker.”
