Sometimes it’s quarterback Shane Stafford. Other times it’s running back Brandon Rhoads.

But last week, it was Belton running back Kavan Johnson who led his team in rushing before running away with Player of the Week honors.

The junior amassed 108 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and caught three passes for 43 yards and a score against Ellison.

With 586 votes, Johnson also earned 239 more tallies than the runner-up, Harker Heights running back Marcus Anderson II, who rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown on 23 touches.

Johnson got some help from his parents, who advertised his nomination on Facebook and social media.

He believes his agility fits well in the Tigers spread offense. Play calling and a big offensive line allowed him to move laterally, cut corners and circumvent Ellison’s big defense, he said.

“The line does a lot,” Johnson said. “They know what they’re doing. They’re experienced. They go where they need to go.”

Johnson scored on two fourth downs, taking a delayed handoff 40 yards in the third quarter and taking a fourth-and-6 Stafford jump pass 30 yards to the house.

“(Johnson) was huge,” Stafford said after the game. “Without Kavan, this game could’ve turned out completely different.”
