Claim to fame: A two-year starter on the varsity basketball team, Hankamer is the third-leading scorer for the 15th-ranked Eagles (18-6, 6-0 22-2A) averaging 14 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Hankamer also finished fourth individually at the District 25-3A golf meet last season with a two-day 151 (75-76).

The team is off to a pretty hot start to district play, what’s this season been like for you?

“We’re nearly through the first half of district and right now we’re all really united under one common goal — winning district — and we’re just looking to keep that run going as we move into the second half.”

So what’s been working so far to have so much success?

“We have a real good chemistry going on among the players right now, and we’re doing the little things right like offensive rebounding and playing hard on defense to get steals, and we’re doing real good in transition, also.”

The team’s been referring to itself as “The Arsenal.” What does that name mean to you?

“It means we all have our different strengths that we can bring to this team and this program, and we all really know our roles between the team.”

What do you think your role/strengths are within this team?

“I feel like I need to work really hard on rebounding, and shooting the ball when it’s open and passing it when it’s not.”

What is your preference, driving to the lane or shooting 3s from outside the arc?

“A little bit of both. I like to mix it up and keep the defense guessing.”

This team is built around those guys that like to drive in for the tough layups, where does that mentality come from?

“We’re just a scrappy bunch, all flying around the floor and playing as hard as we can, giving 110 percent effort.”

Do you have any pregame rituals you do as a team?

“We always like to have fun with a little music in the locker room before (a game) and with stretching.”

What do you like to do away from the court, away from school?

“I like to hang out with friends a lot, and we do a lot of stuff as a team since we’re all real close friends. And we go out to dinners and stuff together sometimes — team dinners are definitely fun.”

What’s your favorite sport?

“I’d have to say golf.”

What’s your handicap then? What’s the best round you’ve ever had?

“It’s about a 3. (I’ve shot a) 69 before in a tournament.”
