Rayshun Spearman is used to running past opposing defenders. This week, he’ll look to run toward school history.

The Grey Wolves are in the playoffs for the second time in school history and Spearman is one of the main contributors on a team that finished third in District 8-5A.

Spearman ran for 814 yards and nine touchdowns this season, including 6- and 9-yard scores in a 34-9 win over Ellison that clinched a playoff spot.

Shoemaker looks for its first playoff win in school history when it takes on Mansfield Timberview at 7 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco.

Does it feel different preparing for a playoff game this week?

Yes, it does. Usually the season’s over and we’re in the offseason right now. It’s an honor to go to the playoffs and do something good for our school.

What’s it been like on campus this week?

They’ve (classmates) congratulated us and said how good we’re doing because they’re not used to a football team winning.

Was there a turning point where you guys knew you had the confidence to make the playoffs?

Right at the back-to-back losses to (Copperas) Cove and Temple, we went back to the drawing board and watched film. We came out to try to make a statement and win the rest of our games.

What stands out about Timberview?

Their defense really stands out. I know they have a good secondary with some guys who can make plays.

What do you like most about playing football?

I feel like you can gang up on people. Say you’re mad, it’s a good way to release your emotions.

How were you introduced to the game?

Ever since I was little, my dad used to play catch in the yard, and when I got to the first grade, I fell in love with the game and have played it ever since.

What’s made a difference for this team coming down the stretch?

All of the hard work we’ve put in — the extra work, staying focused and staying humble while we try to reach our goal.

What do you think playing in a playoff game will be like?

It will be an honor because most teams don’t make it to the playoffs and we haven’t made it to the playoffs since 2008. It’s kind of weird but, at the same time, it feels good.

Does the possibility of this being your last game make you nervous?

It will, but if we go out, give our all and play as a team, we’ll come out on top.
