Three of Copperas Cove's four 2010 powerlifting state qualifiers are heading back for another shot at a title.

The Lady Bulldawgs took second place in team totals at the Region meet Saturday at Gatesville.

Ashleigh Andrews (165-pound weight class) heads back to state after winning her class and also setting new regional squat and bench press records. Alicia Drever and Lindsey Chisolm placed third and seventh, respectively, in the 97-pound class. Kenya Williams (114) took fifth in her division, setting a new regional deadlift record in the process. Jinea Witter (123), a three-time state qualifier, took second place.

The state meet is March 18-19 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.

Pair of Lady Dawgs make first team

Basketball standouts Jasmine Baskin and Alex Rodriguez were both named the District 12-5A all-district first teams.

The Lady Bulldawgs also a pair - Shawnte Goff and Jessica Best - named to the second team.

Ellison's Alayshia Hunter shared District Most Valuable Player award with Taylor Tucker of A&M Consolidated.The Lady Eagles also took two more superlatives, with Jalissa Williams being named Defensive Player of the Year and Deja Pointer tabbed as the Newcomer of the Year.

Ellison's Sherry McKinnon and Harker Heights' Shirretha Nelson were named co-Coaches of the Year.

Temple's Loryn Goodwin was named the district's offensive player of the year.

Artis earns district honor

Senior Ricardo Artis was named a first-team honoree on the boys basketball all-District 12-5A team. Other Bulldawgs named to the team were: Juwan Rice, Jonathan Bridges, Cory Scott, Robert King and Myron Taylor. The five all received honorable mention.

Bryan junior J-Mychal Reese was named Most Valuable Player while Ellison senior Devonte Brown was picked as the Defensive MVP and Shoemaker post Chris Runnels was Newcomer of the Year.

Harker Heights head coach Celneque Bobbitt earned Coach-of-the-year honors.

Tennis team gets one win, two thirds at Invitational

Senior Malika Bembridge took first place in the 'A' girls singles bracket last week at the Big Red Invitational in Belton. She defeated Lorissa Carnes of Harker Heights 8-0, Alex Marlin of Temple 6-2,7-6 (8-6) and Amy Friesenhahn of Round Rock McNeil 6-1,7-6 (4).

In 'A' girls doubles, Kiera Dieter and Dana Torrez placed third, winning two matches before falling in the semifinals. The two rebounded, winning their third-place match in three sets.

On the boys' side, Eric Juarez and Cameron Wood took third, fending off teammates Austin Crowe-Byrd and Daniel Legare 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 in the third-place match.
