COPPERAS COVE — Robert Griffin III is all in for Copperas Cove.
The Washington Redskins quarterback and high-profile alumni of Cove donated more than $100,000 worth of athletic gear to the Copperas Cove Independent School District.
Griffin, who won the Heisman Trophy while playing at Baylor, partnered with Adidas to donate uniforms for the school’s football team, as well as the boys basketball and track teams.
The CCISD Board of Trustees must approve donations for specific departments and donations totaling more than $15,000.
During its Tuesday meeting, the board accepted Griffin’s donations as well as a $10,000 donation from Charles Tillman and Riddell Equipment.
Tillman, a Pro Bowl defensive back with the Chicago Bears and former Bulldawg, donated funds specifically to the athletic department for football helmets.
Griffin led the Bulldawgs football team to back-to-back Division I-4A state championship games in 2006 and 2007 — the only two state-title appearances in school history. The one-time Olympic hopeful also helped the track team secure its only state title, winning gold medals in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles in 2007.
Tillman was all-state honorable mention honoree at wide receiver as a senior for the Bulldawgs in 1998, when they returned to the playoffs for the first time in 38 years.
This isn’t the first time Griffin and Tillman donated back to the community they grew up in.
In October, Griffin donated about $80,000 worth of new, personalized uniforms to the entire CCISD football program prior to the season. Tillman donated a $3,000 equipment grant to the school last March.
