Trailing after one quarter on the road Friday, No. 14 Harker Heights not only seized control of a hotly contested district game but also of first place in a close district race.

With four District 8-5A teams tied for second with two district losses, Heights (17-3) now sits alone at the top of the standings after its latest victory, a 66-55 statement against Copperas Cove.

The Knights’ lone loss in league play remains a district-opening loss to rival Ellison.

And Heights continued its roll by refusing to fall on the road against Cove as Ellison did a week earlier.

Staring down a 13-7 deficit entering the second quarter, Heights senior Josh DeLaney said the Knights knew it was time to turn it on.

The result was a six-point deficit turning into an 11-point lead by halftime as Heights scored 26 points in the frame.

DeLaney had nine of those second-quarter points and finished with a game-high 26.

In fact, DeLaney and juniors C.J. Bobbitt and D’Angelo Streeter combined for all but three of the Knights’ points in the second quarter.

Cove got close but never over the hump as Heights cruised to its fourth straight district win.

And with it, the Knights now have a game lead at the top of 8-5A with two games to play in the first half of the district season.

Slim as that lead might be, it may prove crucial with six teams vying for four playoff spots in 8-5A.

And Heights gained that advantage by turning it on in the final three quarters on the road Friday.
