Daysha Roberts knew no matter what Shoemaker’s record was coming into the home game against Temple last Tuesday, it was a new start.

And she had to step up.

The Lady Grey Wolves guard averaged 9.5 points this week, including 10 points and a key basket late in a district-opening win over Temple.

“I was just so ready because everyone always doubts Shoemaker. I was ready to come out and show them that we’re not a team to doubt,” Roberts said. “You need to look out when you play us.”

For her efforts, Roberts earned the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week award.

Roberts finished with 1,074 votes and edged out Harker Heights guard Alexus Dukes, who finished with 1,006 votes.

The Lady Grey Wolves guard enjoyed a late push to win the award Thursday.

Roberts was third in voting Tuesday night with 235 votes, but was up to 712 by Wednesday.

The nomination came as a surprise to the Shoemaker senior, but Grey Wolves fans helped spread the word.

“I told my mom that night, and she was like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to tell everybody on Facebook,’” Roberts said.

“I went to our counselor and asked if she could announce it and ask everybody to vote for me so we can get the votes up. A lot of my family members have been waking up out of their sleep and voting for me every hour.”

Shoemaker coach Lori Shead said she has seen a change in Roberts during her senior season.

“She’s a lot more serious about the game,” Shead said. “I think all kids think they have forever to play until they realize that high school is coming to an end. Daysha has done some great things for us already and tries to make sure she takes on more of a leadership role.”

Shoemaker continues district play tonight when it hosts Harker Heights.

Dukes averaged 17.5 points as the Lady Knights opened 8-5A play with wins over Belton and Killeen.

Dukes scored five of the last seven points, including a go-ahead 3-point play, in a comeback win over the Lady Roos.

Ellison small forward Malik Malone and Salado point guard Kase Spears also were nominated for the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week award.

Spears averaged 12 points as the 24th-ranked Eagles went 4-0 on the week, including the championship of the Hamilton Tournament, where he was named MVP.

Malone averaged 14.3 points, including 28 against Pflugerville Connally, as the Eagles advanced to the championship game at the Pflugerville Tournament. Malone was named to the all-tournament team.
