The Salado boys soccer team advanced into the second round of postseason play after a 2-0 blanking of Mexia on Tuesday at Waco ISD Stadium. Salado scored both its goals in the first half.
Fifteen minutes into the contest, center-midfielder Daniel Lemus assisted Brad Cosper who booted home an 18-yarder.
“It was a fantastic pass by Daniel,” said Salado head coach Michael Goos. “It was a very clutch play all the way around.”
“One of their midfielders made a bad pass and I just jumped on it,” said Lemus, a senior. “I got it to Brad and he put it in.”
With 10 minutes left in the half, Chase Crenwelge scored off a Josh Rogers assist.
“Josh can throw that ball in far,” Goos said. “On that goal, Joss made a throw-in into the box and from there Chase buried a 12-yarder into the south corner of the goal.”
Up 2-0 at halftime, Goos said he and his players felt confident.
“I felt we were the better team and we had done what we needed to do,” Goos said. “I had wanted us to jump on them early and that’s what we did. So at halftime I felt very confident about what the end result would be. Having the 2-0 cushion was huge. I told my guys that we were in a good spot, I made just a few adjustments and my guys, I could tell, looked confident.”
Salado (17-5-1) stayed aggressive in the second half.
“We kept up with our attack,” Goos said. “We had quite a few more chances to score. We were just a bit wide with some shots. Mexia played great but they got frustrated and started getting physical in the second half but we kept our cool.”
“It was a hard-fought game,” Lemus said. “We came at them hard and we put it to them.
“Their midfield was really strong. The key for us was to not let them get any through-balls and we succeeded at that. Plus, our goalie, Mason Price, deserves huge props. He played fantastic. We wouldn’t be anywhere without him.”
