Alex Cooke’s runner-up finish led five Eagles in the top 20 as the Salado boys cross country team locked up the Region III-2A championship with 52 points Saturday at Atascocita High School in Humble.

Cooke took second with a time of 16 minutes, 19.2 seconds, less than four seconds behind individual champion Brad Beckham of New Diana, and was followed closely by fellow seniors Robert Pereira in fifth (16:46.4), Patrick Murray in 11th (17:09.3), Jon Franz in 16th (17:47.3) and brother Nick Cooke in 18th (17:55.3).

Lady Eagles junior Ashley Adams also finished second overall in the girls 2-mile run with a time of 12:26.7, followed by freshman Saxton China in seventh (12:43.1) as the Salado girls took third as a team.

Arianna Rangel was Salado’s other top-20 finisher at 15th (13:06.4).

Finishing among the top three teams, both Salado boys and girls advance to the Class 2A state meet Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

At the Region I-5A meet in Lubbock, no area runner was able to advance, with Harker Heights’ Cristina Cortez leading the 8-5A girls representatives, finishing 40th.

Cameron Woodberry posted the top finish for the Copperas Cove contingent. He was 46th with a time of 16:15.
