District 22-2A was coming after the Lady Eagles, first-year Salado girls basketball coach Diana Konarik told her team, then 3-0 in district, before the Christmas break.

Defense had earned the Lady Eagles those district wins and it was defense that they needed to ward off teams aiming to pierce that undefeated bull’s eye.

Konarik challenged her team to allow Rosebud-Lott no more than seven rebounds in Thursday’s district game. The Lady Eagles surrendered only six.

“(Coming in after the Christmas break), they kept up their intensity and kept playing,” Konarik said. “They wanted more (defense) when they came back from the break, actually.”

Meredith Ward scored 16 points and Ashley Adams added 10 to lead Salado to a 53-25 win over the Lady Cougars in Rosebud.

Taryn Kornegay scored 10 points, Jaylee Sebek added eight and Taylor Atwood and Carmella Perez each chipped in three for Salado (11-9, 4-0).
