Salado’s Shyenne Hicks pitches against Corsican Mildred in a May 4, 2013, playoff game in Waco.

After what it considered an early exit from the playoffs last season, Salado has made it no secret that it has higher expectations for 2014.

And while the Lady Lobo Classic title in no way guarantees Salado will improve on its area-round exit from the 2013 playoffs, with only one senior graduated from last year, it was certainly an encouraging sign in the young softball season.

“We’re already very far ahead of where we were at this time last year, especially since we only graduated one senior last year,” Lady Eagle head coach Kory Craddick said. “All these girls have come in and, I wouldn’t say we picked up from where we left off, but we were able to start a little further ahead from where we were last year. And that’s been great to come in and do.”

Not only did Salado graduate just one senior last season, but the Lady Eagles return two players who have signed to compete at the next level in defending district Defensive MVP Shyenne Hicks (Texas A&M-Kingsville) and right fielder Morgan Hill (McLennan Community College.)

But Craddick said his expectations are high for everyone on the team, particularly a talented senior class that also includes players Reagan Best, Josie Norman, Rachel Jordan and Summer Sloan.

And to win the Lady Lobo Classic on the opening weekend of the softball season was not only a sign that the Lady Eagles are heading in the right direction, but a confidence booster early in the season.

“Going out there was mainly about bonding and working together and becoming the team we want to become and we’ve gotten a few steps closer over one weekend of doing that,” Craddick said.

The Lady Eagles can only hope that the sky is the limit from here.
