Salado couldn’t make up any ground and actually carded 15 shots worse than the day before.

Thankfully, none of their competition did better.

And for the first time since winning the third of three straight 2A state titles in 2009, the Eagles are headed back to state after carding a team with a two-day total of 693 to finish second at the Region II-2A boys golf tournament Thursday at the Legends Golf Club in Stephenville.

As a team, Salado shot a 354, 15 strokes off of their Day 1 pace of 339, and finished six strokes behind champion Whitesboro, which also struggled with a Day 2 round of 352.

After finishing Day 1 in second place with a 75, junior Dane Hankamer shot an 84 to finish in fourth with a two-day 159.

Kase Spears carded four strokes better than his Day 1 total and finished with a two-day 174, while Kyle Heiner (7th) overshot his Day 1 total by 12 strokes and carded a two-day 170 after finishing Wednesday tied for fifth with a 79.

Brandon Womac shot a two-day 190 and Javier Cruz-Cortes equaled his Day 1 tally with a two-day 204.
