Three Salado girls track relay teams will compete at the 2A Regional Meet on Friday in Stephenville — and 15-year head coach Cindy Mewhinney is fired up.

“Each of the relay events will have tough competition but I’m very excited to see us compete,” she said.

Running the mile relay, in order, will be Sara Wilkerson, Ariana Rangel, Tabetha Mazo and Ashley Adams.

The top eight of 16 competing teams on Friday advance to the finals on Saturday.

“I definitely think we can advance to Saturday,” Mewhinney said. “Our best time is 4:13. We need to drop that to 4:10.”

Running the 800 relay will be Abby Quick, Meagan Hill, Jaylee Sebek and Taylor Atwood.

“The handoff is the whole key to this event,” Mewhinney said.

“Abby is very good at getting out to a good start for us. We need her close to 26-flat or a 26.5. If she does that, we’ll be in business. Meagan can also run a low-26. I think Jaylee will also run in the low 26s and then Taylor Atwood can run a 25.5. That’s what we’re all hoping for.

“Last year, this same team ran for a school record at the state meet.”

The 4x100 sprint relay team in 2014 is also the same team Salado fielded last year—and that quartet advanced all the way to the state meet.

Molly Colvin will start the sprint relay, followed by Sebek and Morgan Hill. Atwood is the anchor.

“Molly is a very good starter,” Mewhinney said. “The team feels very comfortable with her in the blocks. Jaylee runs a great straight, Morgan is excellent on the curve and Taylor is our fastest runner.

“If we can run below 50 seconds, I’ll be happy.”
