After qualifying for the Texas State Meet in the 100 hurdles two weeks ago, Salado senior Morgan Hill set up an impressive goal for herself.

“I thought it would be great to be able to break the school record,” she said.

The current Salado record of 14.77 was set more than seven years ago.

Hill ran a personal best of 15.03 at the regional meet, ranking her third in the upcoming 2A state meet field. The Salado school record is clearly within her grasp.

But her track coaches, Cindy Mewhinney and Gary Ramthun, have upped the ante for Hill.

“Coach Ramthun told me, ‘Your first goal now is to win state,’ ” Hill said. “He told me that he thinks I can do that. He told me my second goal is to break the school record. He said whatever happens after that, happens.

“I’m very grateful that my coaches have such confidence in me so I’m completely on board with how they’ve prioritized things. I originally thought just getting on the medal stand would be great. But they both believe in me so much so the goal now is to first win state, then break the school record.”

“Morgan looks phenomenal in practices this week,” Mewhinney said. “She’s running her best times. There’s no doubt she’s got a chance to set the school record but we also believe she’ll be challenging for first place. She’s third going into this, and she’s looking really smooth.”

Hill said she’s been relaxed at practices all week.

“Well, there’s not too much new I can actually work on,” she said with a good-natured chuckle. “After all, I’ve been running hurdles since second grade.”
