The thought never crossed Analise Watson’s mind until it actually happened.

After being named newcomer of the year as a freshman, Lampasas’ center-midfielder did not enter the 2013 season with the intention of earning another award, but regardless, she did.

Much to her dismay, Watson received the District 34-4A MVP after scoring more than 20 goals and leading the Lady Badgers to the Region III-4A sectionals for a second consecutive season.

“Actually, I never thought about it,” the sophomore said of the accolade. “Not at all … But it is special and neat to know you beat out others to get the award.”

Lampasas head coach Tracy Brantley, however, is not surprised at all.

“Analise is one of those athletes that every coach would love to have,” Brantley said. “She is dedicated to the game of soccer and works so hard at it.”

In all, 13 Lady Badgers were recognized on the all-district list following their 18-9-2 season including a 9-1 showing in district, and Brantley was named coach of the year.

Lampasas finished with six first-team selections on the list, including junior Maria Salinas, who received the offensive MVP after finishing second on the team behind Watson in goals scored after delivering a five-goal performance against Waco in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

“She is very capable of becoming amazing, and this year, she wanted to prove just that,” Brantley said.

Salado also received a pair of individual awards as freshman Blake Stephenson was named newcomer of the year and senior Madi Depriest was named goalkeeper co-MVP with Brownwood’s Katelyn Murphy.

Lady Eagles head coach Michael Goos believes Stephenson could mimic Watson and make a run at the MVP award next season as a sophomore.

“It gives her something to let her know that her hard work this year has paid off,” he said. “I know with a lot of kids, (receiving awards) puts a lot of pressure on them, but at the same time, most of them rise to the occasion. I think she will look at this as a steppingstone and look for other awards down the road.”

Losing Depriest, however, will leave a significant void on the roster, according to Goos.

“The only downside to (Depriest) is I wish she was s freshman right now,” he said. “She is just an amazing athlete to come out and in her only year to play soccer to help the team out and do what she did shows exactly what kind of girl, athlete and person she is.”

The Lady Eagles also produced three first-team representatives, three second-team members and three honorable mentions after going 8-14-1 to finish third in the district behind Lampasas and Brownwood.

Lady Lions junior Alex Bernal was named midfield MVP and Robinson’s Jesse Jaynes received the defensive MVP award.
