Though the high school regular season is still a few weeks away, the Texas Associated Press gave teams in the area a target with the release of the 2014 preseason poll on Wednesday.
Though no area teams were ranked, the list included some teams that local schools will either play or scrimmage.
Cove will enter the regular season at full speed as the Bulldawgs have home games against A&M Consolidated on Aug. 29 and Austin Lake Travis on Sept. 5. Consolidated is ranked fourth in the Class 5A poll while Lake Travis is ninth in the Class 6A poll.
Florence closes the regular season with difficult District 10-3A, Division I matchups.
The Buffaloes host No. 4 Cameron Yoe on Oct. 31 and visit No. 10 Rockdale on Nov. 7.
Harker Heights will prepare for District 12-6A play by visiting a former District 8-5A rival in Temple on Sept. 19.
The Wildcats were reclassified into Class 5A during the latest round of UIL realignment and are ranked seventh in the preseason poll.
Heights head coach Jerry Edwards said one of the reasons Temple was on the schedule was the district rivalry over the years and proximity.
“They’ve got a tradition with their team and we just thought it would be a good game heading into district,” Edwards said.
The Killeen Kangaroos cross paths with Temple, but that will take place during a preseason scrimmage on Aug. 29.
Gatesville will give Hornet fans a big home opener on Sept. 5 when it hosts Stephenville, the top ranked Class 4A team in the poll.
Salado faces 12th-ranked La Grange on Halloween night at home.
