Riley McClure led a strong Gatesville quintet that captured first place in the boys 1A-4A division of the Hewitt Kiwanis Midway Cross Country Meet on Thursday.
McClure placed fifth with a time of 16 minutes, 40.5 seconds on the 3-mile course.
China Spring took the top two spots, but the Hornets’ superior depth — their top five all finished in the top 21 of competing teams to score 75 points— enabled them to finish well ahead of Groesbeck (93), Academy (96) and the Cougars (111) in the 16-team field.
The rest of Gatesville’s scorers were Miles Barnes (15th overall, 17:43.1), Baylee Ivy (17th, 17:47.5), Horacio Briseno (21st, 17:58.4) and Aaron James (23rd, 18:14.9).
Belton girls finish third at Waco Midway cross country meet
Jordan Jones’ fifth-place finish helped the Belton girls cross country team finish third Thursday in the 5A-6A division of the Hewitt Kiwanis Midway Cross Country Meet.
Jones’ time was 19:14.7. The Lady Tigers placed seven runners in the top 24 of competing teams and scored 69 points, one behind runner-up host Waco Midway.
College Station dominated the meet, placing three in the top four and scoring 33 points.
All seven District 8-6A teams were represented at the meet. Harker Heights was fourth (128 points), Copperas Cove fifth (146), Ellison sixth (169) and Killeen seventh (199). Shoemaker did not field a complete team.
Jasmine Early led Heights with a seventh-place finish overall at 19:25.6. Killeen’s Amira Lambertis was right behind at 19:36.6.
Belton’s Abigail Cargile was 10th (19:39.2) and Madisen Honea led Copperas Cove with a 12th-place finish of 20:08.7.
