District 8-6A continues its reign as one of the state’s strongest districts after another impressive showing in the girls state polls.
After being ranked eighth in last week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, Ellison moved up a spot to No. 7 by improving to 17-7 overall and 7-0 in district with victories against Killeen and Belton.
District rivals Waco Midway and Copperas Cove continue to join the Lady Eagles in the polls, maintaining their places at No. 19 and No. 21, respectively.
Ellison is scheduled to host the Pantherettes in a state-ranked showdown Tuesday at 7 p.m. and travel to San Angelo Central on Friday.
Copperas Cove plays at home against Belton on Tuesday before preparing for Friday’s road contest at Midway.
In the new Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, the Lady Eagles are the area’s only ranked team, sitting at No. 7.
In the Class 6A boys poll, Ellison drops one spot to No. 13 on the heels of Friday’s 37-35 victory against Belton. The Eagles (23-2, 5-0) travel to play Midway on Tuesday and host the Bobcats on Friday.
No other area teams were ranked, but some of their opponents are.
In the boys polls, Waco Connally climbed one spot to No. 18. The Cadets compete with Gatesville in District 17-4A.
The Hornets also share their district with a state-ranked girls team after Lorena broke into the polls, landing at No. 23.
In District 19-4A, Lampasas and Salado must continue to contend with the state’s top ranked Class 4A team after No. 1 Liberty Hill maintained its position. The Lady Panthers are also atop the latest TGCA poll.
Liberty Hill beat the Lady Eagles 92-21 on Jan. 5 and defeated the Lady Badgers 89-27 on Friday.
