Ethan Buchanan scored twice and the Ellison boys soccer team kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 3-0 home shutout of Copperas Cove on Tuesday.

The sixth-place Eagles (5-11-2, 3-6-2 8-6A) began the night nine points behind fourth-place Midway with four games remaining.

Buchanan scored just 3 minutes and 12 seconds in, beating the keeper one-on-one after taking a through ball from Frank Chiribel.

Cayden Triggs made it 2-0 with five minutes left in the half.

Buchanan tallied his second goal with 10:43 to play, assisted by Morgan Button.

Frank Evans and Samuel Morrall each played a half in goal to combine for the shutout.

Ellison hosts fifth-place Harker Heights (4-6-1 8-6A) in a crucial match for both teams on Friday.

SALADO GIRLS 7, JARRELL 0: At Jarrell, Sam Houston State signee Tyler Pierce scored twice and the Lady Eagles rolled to a win on the road.

Hannah Reavis added a goal and two assists. Ashlen LaCanne, Aubrey Heffner, Lauren Wilson and Reagan Morreale also scored for Salado. Madison Spradlin also assisted on two scores.

The Lady Eagles host Florence in the second half of a varsity doubleheader on Friday following the 5:30 p.m. boys match.

SALADO BOYS 5, JARRELL 0: At Jarrell, five different players scored as the Eagles shut out Jarrell.

Kaden Smien opened the scoring, assisted by Costas Loullis. The remaining goals for Salado (12-5-1, 5-0 25-4A) were scored by Manuel Tonchez, Jack Spradlin, Armondo Castillo and Brandon Rodriguez.

Tonchez and Spradlin also had assists.

Trey Sheppard and Freeman Vilotas shared time in goal for the clean sheet, Salado’s 10th of the season.

The Eagles host Florence on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

ELLISON GIRLS 1, COPPERAS COVE 0: At Copperas Cove, Keegan Stewart scored on a corner kick in the second half to lift the Lady Eagles to a victory.

BELTON GIRLS 7, SHOEMAKER 1: At Shoemaker, Tiarra Hodges recorded a hat trick in the Lady Tigers' win.

GOLF

Gatesville's Jed Smith carded a nine-hole 37 to win the rain-shortened Gatesville Invitational on Tuesday at Gatesville Country Club.

The Hornets cruised to the team title, finishing at 156 to beat Robinson by 24 strokes. Cameron Hudson finished third with a 38 for Gatesville. Jett Truss (39), Evan Washburn (42) and Braden Luensmann (43) also posted strong scores.

The tournament featured three schools and five teams.

MONDAY

Johnson, Ingram lead Cove baseballers in 6-2 win

Cameron Johnson tossed 4 2/3 innings of no-hit ball, and Tyler Ingram drove in three runs as Copperas Cove beat Lufkin Hudson 6-2 on Monday in Franklin.

The game was moved up a day due to the threat of inclement weather.

Johnson finished with 11 strikeouts. Ingram was 2 for 4 at the plate. Colby Jost and Nick Izquierdo also drove in runs. Jacob Wagner had a double.

The Bulldawgs are 4-0 and return to action Thursday at the Austin ISD tourney.

Wilk leads Salado in doubleheader victory

Arkansas signee Jacob Wilk homered twice and relieved in a combined no-hitter as the Salado Eagles started their season by beating Del Valle 3-1 and Caldwell 5-1 on Monday in Del Valle.

Wilk homered in both games. He was 3 for 3 in the opener and drove in all three runs.

Starter Drew Dobbins pitched four hitless innings against Del Valle. Max Marin and Wilk finished off the combined no-hitter.

The Caldwell game was a rematch of last season’s bi-district playoff series
