Shianne Johnson scored 21 points and the 19th-ranked Killeen Lady Roos cruised to first place in Pool B with an 82-27 rout of Smithville on Monday at Bastrop ISD’s 25-team G.M. Blackman Tournament.
Alexus Scharkley (11 points) and Jacen Moore (10) also scored in double figures. A dozen Lady Roos scored in the game.
The Lady Roos (16-4) dominated in every quarter, leading 45-18 at hafltime and holding Smithville to a single point in the final frame.
Killeen began the day with a 56-38 win over Round Rock.
Sophomore Manesha Knox led the Lady Roos with 10 points. Courtney McCreary added eight, and Johnson and Scharkley each had seven.
Killeen showed little rust from its 10-day holiday layoff, outscoring the Lady Dragons 32-16 during the middle two quarters.
The Lady Roos face Austin Anderson today at 10:30 a.m. in the championship bracket.
LAMPASAS BOYS SWEEP OPENING DAY: At Comfort, the Badgers defeated Mason and Marble Falls Faith Academy during the first day of play at the Comfort Holiday Classic.
Lampasas (11-1) began the day by using a strong fourth quarter en route to a 45-27 victory against the Punchers before repeating the feat in a 61-27 win against Faith Academy.
The Badgers play San Antonio Lutheran and Pleasanton today at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
NO. 24 LOMETA SUFFERS FIRST LOSS: At Troy, the Hornets saw their season-long winning streak snapped as Class 1A No. 6 Waelder earned a one-point overtime victory at the Troy tournament.
After improving its unblemished record to 13-0, Lometa saw Waelder capitalize on a pair of last-second free throws to beat the Hornets 59-58. Adrian Rivera led the Hornets in the loss, scoring 21 points. Earlier in the day, Reid Moore and Connell Barnett scored 17 and 13 points, respectively, to guide Lometa to a 59-53 victory against West. The Hornets return to the court today, facing Rogers at 12:30 p.m.
LADY DAWGS SPLIT AT AGGIELAND INVITATIONAL: At College Station, Copperas Cove went 1-1 to open play at the McDonalds tournament, defeating Houston Bellaire before falling to Class 6A No. 20 Clear Lake.
In the opener, the Lady Bulldawgs used a 16-7 outburst in the third quarter to deliver a 52-39 victory against Bellaire as Keturah Taylor scored a team-high 14 points for Copperas Cove, while teammates Alex Wilson (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Chyanne Chapman (11 points, 11 rebounds) both recorded a double-double.
Copperas Cove’s offense struggled against Clear Lake, however, as the Lady Bulldawgs made just one shot in the first half en route to losing 50-43.
Kaycie Gatewood led Copperas Cove with 12 points in the defeat. The Lady Bulldawgs (15-7) continue play today, facing Sachse at 11 a.m.
