Tommy Connell and a strong contingent of pole vaulters helped the Copperas Cove boys track team win the Texas State High School Invitational on Saturday in San Marcos.

The Bulldawgs finished with 148 points to top runner-up Leander Rouse by 39. The rest of the top five were San Marcos (95 points), Bastrop (88) and Cedar Creek (58). Thirteen teams scored points in the meet.

Connell won the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 16.14 seconds. Teammate Jevonne Lee was third at 17.04.

Connell also led off the 4x100 relay that the Bulldawgs won in 43.38. He ran with Jameel Rice, Isaiah Hawkins and AJ Acosta.

Junior Kyle Stifflemire led a Cove sweep of the top three spots in the pole vault with a personal-best showing of 15 feet, 6 inches. Sophomore Jacob Penman (personal-best 12-0) and senior Chris Penman (11-0) were next.

Daveon Thomas (shot put) and Quentin Ford (long jump) also earned victories for the Bulldawgs.

The Bulldawgs also finished second in the 4x200 with Acosta, Rice, Dmitri Bell and Kamereon Spruill.

In the girls division, Copperas Cove finished third with 100.5 points. Rouse won the meet with 174.5 points. Kyle Lehman was second with 114.

Cove Quarterback Club to meet Wednesday

Your article has one discrepancy.. It states that Isaiah Hawkins ran the 200 and almost places first but it was AJ Acosta that ran in his place. I'm am not sure how to fix this with the records but I thought you should know. As it is important to the points he gets for the year.
