Sydney Brock led three Ellison players in double figures with 17 points and the 20th-ranked Lady Eagles won their District 8-6A opener 54-42 on Friday at No. 19 Waco Midway.

Marliah Johnson added 13 points for Ellison (10-5). Cielo McClain had 11.

Playing in a tough environment, defending 8-6A tri-champ Ellison had just 10 turnovers against a team coming off a Tuesday victory against third-ranked Pflugerville.

“Our defensive effort was stellar,” Ellison coach Sherry McKinnon said. “Everything that Midway shot, we made it very hard for them.”

Ellison hosts San Angelo Central on Tuesday.

NO. 11 COPPERAS COVE 53, BELTON 35: At Belton, M.J. Honea and Erica Powell each scored 13 points to lead the Lady Dawgs to an 8-6A-opening road win.

Cove hosts No. 19 Midway on Tuesday. The game will be carried live on www.centexcentral.com at 7 p.m.

NO. 19 ELLISON BOYS WIN TWO AT PFLUGERVILLE TOURNEY: Elijah Moleon and Laurence Bryant each scored 18 points as Ellison capped a perfect day at the Pflugerville tournament with an 80-54 rout of Houston Westbury.

Casey Armour and Chandler Sutton each added nine points for Ellison (14-1).

The Eagles outscored Westbury in every quarter.

Earlier in the day, Armour scored 18 in a 58-48 win over Pflugerville Hendrickson.

Ellison trailed 12-6 after the opening quarter, but finished the half with a 29-99 lead.

K.J. Green made a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the Eagles. Sutton added nine.

BADGERS WIN TWICE AT HAMILTON TOURNEY: Tyler Quarles scored 14 points and the Badgers beat Llano 45-33 for their second win of the day in the Hamilton tourney.

The District 19-4A rivals played conservatively, not wanting to give away much of their playbook ahead of their first district matchup on Dec. 19.

Llano is also where Lampasas graduate Aaron Nuckles coached for one season before jumping at the opportunity to return to his alma mater last spring.

Kyle Sims and Austin Martin each added seven points for the Badgers (11-4).

The Badgers get a rematch with Dublin tonight at 7:30 for the championship. Lampasas beat Dublin 85-57 in pool play Thursday.

The Badgers' first game Friday was also a rematch. Sims scored 16 points as Lampasas beat Brownwood for the second time this season, 66-54.

Lampasas won at Brownwood on Nov. 20.

Quarles (13 points), Xavier Nix (12) and Martin (11) also scored in double figures for the Badgers, who trailed 36-35 at the half, but regained control with a 21-10 third quarter.

Quarles hit three 3-pointers. Sims added seven rebounds and three assists. Phillip Blackstock finished with eight points, eight boards and five assists.
