The Copperas Cove boys basketball team got some good news Tuesday night despite losing its regular-season finale at home against Waco Midway 63-49.
The Bulldawgs clinched the final District 8-6A playoff spot when Killeen lost 51-47 at Shoemaker.
The Dawgs (18-15, 6-8 8-6A) will open the playoffs next week as the No. 4 seed and will face second-ranked District 7-6A champ Cedar Hill.
Cove led Midway 30-29 at halftime, but the Panthers (27-6, 11-3) quickly took command in the second half.
COPPERAS COVE 2, KILLEEN 1: At Leo Buckley Stadium, Adora Lumpkin and Melinda Balades each scored a goal in Lady Dawgs’ victory.
Kailey Walker assisted on both goals for Copperas Cove, which finished the first half of District 8-6A play tied for fourth place with Harker Heights at 3-4.
Destiny Savini scored for the Lady Roos (1-6 8-6A), assisted by Alyssa Cabading.
Jalyn Davis shined on defense for Killeen and also spent 15 minutes in goal. Amira Lambertis and Reyna Ibarra also played great games on defense.
LIBERTY HILL AT SALADO, PPD.: Both the boys and girls games in Salado were postponed. They will be played today, starting with the girls game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.
HARKER HEIGHTS 1, SHOEMAKER 0: At Shoemaker, Adam Skirvin scored his first goal of the season 12 minutes in and the Knights held on for a victory to finish the first half of district play alone in third place.
Seth Bodolus assisted on the goal, sending a crossing pass from the corner through the back, where Skirvin knocked it in from the back side.
Joshua Donovan earned the shutout in goal for the Knights (5-2 8-6A), who are a game behind district co-leaders Belton and San Angelo Central.
COPPERAS COVE 3, KILLEEN 0: At Copperas Cove, Seth Meeks scored twice and the Bulldawgs picked up their first district victory.
Billy Horton also scored for Copperas Cove.
