Gabrielle Griffin scored on a penalty kick and Haven Stevenson added an unassisted goal as the Copperas Cove girls soccer team shut out Shoemaker 2-0 on Friday night at Shoemaker.
The Lady Dawgs (4-8, 12 points) are three points behind Harker Heights (5-7) for the final playoff spot in District 8-6A with two games remaining. Cove plays the Lady Knights on Tuesday in Harker Heights before closing the season at home against Killeen.
Cove is one point behind fifth-place Ellison (4-7-1).
Boyd helps Lady Dawgs finish second at Texas State Invitational
Amber Boyd dominated in the 1,600-meter run and helped the Lady Dawgs break a school record in the 1,600 relay on the way to a second-place finish in the Texas State University Invitational on Friday in San Marcos
Boyd, who broke her own school record in the 1,600 last week at 5:05, won Friday’s 1,600 by more than 30 seconds and anchored the 1,600 relay that finished second in 4:00.37, breaking the previous school mark by nearly three seconds.
Boyd ran the relay with Anaya Copeland, Imari Neal and Talia Kinslow.
Overall, the Lady Dawgs finished second behind perennial powerhouse Lancaster and ahead of Shoemaker, San Marcos and Cedar Creek.
Aidan Chace led a 1-2 finish for Cove in the high jump. Chace cleared 5 feet, 2 inches. Jaela Rice and Shoemaker’s Kiara Johnson each cleared 5-0, but Rice did it in an earlier attempt to take second place.
Shoemaker’s Cherith Hicks (35-0½) and Elexis Vinegar (34-4) took the top two spots in the shot put.
In the boys meet, Shoemaker’s Landon Gray swept the 110 and 300 hurdles. Brian McCutchen won the 400. The Grey Wolves won the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays, and Tyri’K Barnes (6-0) won the high jump.
Barnes, Bob Santiago, Tiji Paul and Daryll Crowder ran on the 800 relay for Shoemaker. Barnes, Crowder, Gray and Paul ran the 1,600. Barnes, Gray, Dequan Cross and Santiago ran the 400 relay.
