COPPERAS COVE — Sprinter Justin Joe won the 100-meter dash and anchored Copperas Cove’s winning 400 relay team to help the host Bulldawgs win the Copperas Cove Relays on Thursday.
Cove scored 130 points, 11 ahead of runner-up Pflugerville Hendrickson. Other teams in the meet included Belton (third, 115 points), Ellison (fourth, 90), Harker Heights (sixth, 46) and Killeen (seventh, 35).
“We figured out a few more pieces of the puzzle tonight and next week we will do some more tweaking, as will other teams,” Cove coach Keith Stifflemire said.
Joe clocked in at 11.11 seconds in the 100. He ran with LeDarian Johnson, Kylan Herrera and Shamad Lomax on the winning relay, which finished in 42.33.
Cove took two wins in the field events. Jaylen Waters won the shot put at 53 feet, 2 inches. David Castillo topped the discus field (160-9).
The Copperas Cove girls finished fifth (65.55 points), led by victories from Caprica Brooks in the triple jump (35-3) and Mikayla Blount in the pole vault (8-6).
Temple won the meet with 158.33 points. Other teams included Killeen (second, 100), Ellison (third 85), Belton (fourth, 80) and Harker Heights (sixth, 48).
Several schools were short-handed, with athletes committed to the Texas Relays in Austin.
