What’s that old sports cliché?

Records were made to be broken.

Well, the 2014 Copperas Cove Lady Bulldawgs volleyball team is on pace to absolutely shatter one.

Last year, Cove won a school-record 40 contests.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Dawgs put a 3-0 stomping on host Pflugerville Connally.

So … it’s not even the end of August, and these 2014 Lady Dawgs have already won 18 matches versus only two losses.

The Lady Dawgs defeated Connally 25-13, 25-8 and 25-14.

“They were a good team that played us tonight,” said Cove senior outside hitter Savannah Cook. “But we’re always on top of our game. We know everyone is always out to get us and that we’ll get each opponent’s best game.

“Our defense, as usual, was stellar tonight. Lexi Perez (22 digs), Lily Raelyn and Ciara Cheadle all were outstanding on defense. And without a great defense, you can’t have any offense.”

Cook had an impressive night, too, recording three digs and making four kills.

“Savannah Cook is a very good outside hitter,” said Cove junior setter Katy Ranes. “I can always set to her and expect to get the kill.”

Ranes had a match-high 19 assists and Mikayla Blount had 18 assists, 14 kills and two aces. Also for Cove, Chyanne Chapman had eight solo blocks and two assist blocks.

“Our offense did very well tonight,” Ranes said. “Once we got a lot of kills, we just shut them down.”

Ranes said her philosophy as a setter is to keep things simple.

“If a hitter is hot,” she said, “you keep feeding that hot hitter until the other team can do something about it. And then you go to the next hitter.”

Cove’s torrid start and record-setting pace this season is no surprise to Ranes.

“We’re always working hard at practice and we’re always ready and determined for every match we play,” she said. “We’re very focused and we have an amazing coach (Cari Lowery). We all love her so much. She knows we make mistakes but she helps us correct them.”

Cook concurred about the importance of Lowery’s guidance.

“Coach is always positive and that helps us a lot,” Cook said. “She keeps us very focused and we all love her and love playing for her.

“As for our fast start this season, I am honestly so proud of every player on our team. We’re strong everywhere: defense, setters and hitters.

“This team of ours can go as far as we want to.”
