COPPERAS COVE — After a surprising loss in Game 1, the Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs took three sets in a row to gain their second straight match win during the young volleyball season, defeating Leander Vandegrift 21-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-22 Tuesday afternoon at Bulldawg Gym.

Destinee Branch had a team-high 11 kills, while Mikayla Blount posted 23 assists and served two aces. Lexi Perez, with 31 digs, and Katy Ranes’ 18 assists helped Cove (2-0) in the victory.

“That’s a good start, that’s a fast game,” Lady Dawg head coach Cari Lowery said. “Vandegrift’s a good team. I was proud of us. We stumbled in the first game, then we came back strong in the second game. We had some first-week miscommunication and things like that. That’s what you expect in the first week. We’re running a lot faster of a game and moving the ball quite a bit to other hitters. So there will be some miscommunication right now.”

The Lady Dawgs will be back in action Thursday when they open play in the Austin Invitational Tournament with a 9 a.m. match against Round Rock Stony Point at Burger Center.

GATESVILLE DEF. WACO 25-12, 25-5, 25-15: At Gatesville, Brianna Poe had five kills and Mikayla Heckmann finished with 17 assists as the Lady Hornets posted their second straight sweep to start the season.

All of Shoemaker’s games will be played at Bowie High School.

KILLEEN DEF. LAGO VISTA 27-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20: At Lago Vista, Sabrina Garcia had 14 kills and the Lady Roos helped new head coach Joanne Knowles win her debut.
