Ellison maintained its position in the state polls Monday, being placed No. 16 in the final Class 6A rankings of the regular season.
After climbing two spots from 18th in the previous poll, the Lady Eagles’ double-digit victories against Harker Heights and Killeen last week did not sway voters to adjust their opinions of the team.
Ellison clinches the District 8-6A championship with a road win Tuesday against Belton in the regular season finale.
The Lady Eagles, however, are not the district’s only representative in the rankings.
Waco Midway moved up two spots to No. 11 after defeating the Lady Tigers and Shoemaker last week.
The Pantherettes, who close the regular season at home against San Angelo Central, are hoping Ellison falters at Belton, leaving the door open to create a tie for the district title after splitting the season series.
Ellison, Midway and Copperas Cove have already secured playoff berths, leaving the Lady Bobcats, the Lady Tigers and the Lady Kangaroos in contention for the district’s final berth.
The team that emerges from the trio will play the state’s top team — Duncanville — in the opening round of the postseason. Additionally, Copperas Cove will begin its playoff run against either No. 14 DeSoto or Cedar Hill.
For the district’s boys, Midway is the only team ranked, remaining 23rd for the second consecutive week, while Ellison was unranked for a second week after climbing to 12th in mid January.
In Class 4A, Lampasas closes out the regular season against the state’s best team after Liberty Hill held its No. 1 ranking for a fifth consecutive week.
The encounter will be similar to what the Lady Badgers can expect when they open their first postseason appearance since 2015 against No. 4 Navasota on Feb. 12.
