Copperas Cove's Erica Powell (54) drives in the lane against San Angelo Central at Copperas Cove High in Copperas Cove on Tuesday, Jan 23, 2018.

Copperas Cove senior Erica Powell is the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 22. Powell, en route to a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, erupted in the fourth quarter (8 points, 6 rebounds) as the Lady Bulldawgs defeated Killeen 67-56.

When/Why did you first decide to start playing basketball?

“It’s kind of a funny story, I didn’t want to at first. My mom was like, ‘You should do it because of your height, and you’re strong,’ so in the eighth grade, I started playing, and I went to AAU and started to get some fundamentals under me, so I started playing for AAU teams, the high school teams, and just ... here I am.”

With the Super Bowl between the Eagles and the Patriots coming soon, who do you think is going to win?

“I think Eagles, because they’ve come so far. They’ve been working. Ever since Michael Vick was put off the team, they’ve been striving to get there, and I think they’re going to come out on top.”

Is there any significance behind your jersey number?

“Chyanne Chapman. She played here, she played on varsity for three years. She was an athlete that would go after it every time. I looked up to her, and now that I get to wear her jersey, I’m setting my example.”

If you had to title a movie about your life, what would it be?

“‘The Life of Erica,’ I guess.”

If you could pick someone to play you in the movie of your life, who would you pick?

“Probably my mom. She knows me like the back of her hand, and she’s been there for me so much, and she’s consistently pushed me until I got better.”

Is there anything you want to check off your high school “bucket list” before you graduate?

“Go to prom. That’s about it. I haven’t really looked forward to anything else because it’s school. All you do is stay on top of your grades, and then, it’s the end of the semester. I’m just focusing on basketball and school, and so I’m just going to stick with that — going to prom.”
