The Copperas Cove High School football team improved to to 2-1 with a 42-23 win against El Paso Franklin in Andrews on Friday. The two teams met halfway for the rivalry game.
The Bulldawgs led 21-9 at halftime and tallied another 21 points in the second half.
Junior running back Shontez Simmons scored on a 47-yard run for the Bulldawgs’ first score. Junior receiver Tommy Connell scored on a pick-six, giving Cove a 14-6 lead near the end of the first quarter.
Franklin kicked a field goal to pull within 14-9. The Bulldawgs scored a second defensive touchown of the game as Zach Moody returned a fumble for a touchdown. Jack Shumaker caused the fumble and Moody scored the points. A point after by Andy Riley-Clark gave Cove a 21-9 lead.
El Paso pulled within 21-17 to begin the third quarter, but Simmons scored on a 10-yard run to extend Cove’s lead to 28-17.
CCHS quarterback Jaylen Smith completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Honts to start the fourth quarter. Simmons scored his third touchdown of the game to sew up the win.
Simmons finished with 112 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Tim Edwards rushed for 75 yards for the Bulldawgs. Smith was 12-for-16 passing for 165 yards and one touchdown. Honts caught five passes for 67 yards and Bryce Ranes finished with four catches for 80 yards.
Defensively, Darius Fuselier finished with 6½ tackles and Connell and Brandon Russ finished with five tackles apiece for Cove.
