HARKER HEIGHTS — On Friday night, Harker Heights took on district rival Copperas Cove High School for a duel in the Knights Court.
Despite a spectacular performance from the Lady Knights in the third set, Heights fell to the 8-6A undefeated Lady Dawgs 3-0.
Cove’s high energy offense, led by junior Kamryn Ash, left the Lady Knights unable to fully bounce back. Cove took the first set 25-7.
Cove (36-8, 11-0 8-6A) struck first again in the second set with a kill from junior Jada Close. A long rally in the early moments ended in favor of the Lady Dawgs, who extended their lead to 11-8, but showed that the Lady Knights (3-8 8-6A) would not go down without a fight. But still, Cove took the set 25-18.
Although the third set started off like the other two, Heights’ defense put up a battle. While Cove took the lead at the start of the set, Heights evened the score six times throughout the period.
The first three times the Lady Knights caught up to Cove, the Lady Dawgs would immediately answer and pull away. By the fourth time they caught up, and building on the energy of the chanting Heights crowd, the Lady Knights started to capitalize on their momentum and pulled ahead 14-11.
Feeling the heat, Cove called timeout and returned to the game pulling ahead once again.
In the final moments of the set, the Lady Knights kept it close and even pressured the Lady Dawgs into another timeout before keeping the game within no more than three points.
In the end, Cove inched into its third set victory 25-23.
Aidan Chace and Talia Kinslow each had 11 kills to lead Cove. Janice Fa'aola added nine. Leah Powell recorded 13 digs. Ash led the Lady Dawgs with 23 assists.
On Tuesday the Lady Dawgs will take on the Shoemaker Grey Wolves at home before heading into the playoffs while the Lady Knights look to build off tonight’s momentum facing Waco Midway’s Panthers at home.
