J'wan Roberts scored 23 points and the Shoemaker boys basketball team pulled away to a 62-45 win over DeSoto in the fifth-place game Friday night at the Whataburger Basketball Tournament in North Richland Hills.

Javon Levi (14 points) and Devyn Brewton (13) also scored in double-figures for the Grey Wolves, who return to District 8-6A action Tuesday in Belton.

Feron Hunt had 18 points and 13 rebounds for DeSoto.

After winning their opener Wednesday 59-50 against Mansfield Lake Ridge, the Grey Wolves lost Thursday to Little Rock (Ark.) Parkview 54-48 despite 23 points from Levi.

Shoemaker bounced back early Friday with a 73-62 win over Round Rock McNeil to earn a spot in the fifth-place game. The Grey Wolves had four players score in double figures against the Mavericks, led by Roberts’ 16. Antoine James had 15, Levi 12 and Taveon Sevaaetasi 11. Duwain Thomas added nine.

Ellison wins consolation championship at Fort Worth Classic

All-tournament selection Michael Aranda drained six 3-pointers and scored 24 points as the Ellison boys basketball team routed Arlington Seguin 70-46 to win the consolation championship Saturday in the Fort Worth ISD Classic.

Dajuan Jones added 18 points for 22nd-ranked Ellison (15-4). Elijah Moleon finished with 10.

The Eagles’ only loss in the tournament was by one point to Arlington Lamar when the Vikings made a pair of free throws in the final seconds after the Eagles missed the front end of a one-and-one at the other end. Ellison also beat North Forney (73-46) and Fort Worth South Hills (74-68).

Ellison returns to District 8-6A action Tuesday at Copperas Cove.
