Carl Robinson III tossed five touchdown passes and the Ellison Eagles held off Montgomery 42-35 on Friday at Leo Buckley Stadium for their third straight win to start the season.
Over the first two weeks of the season the Eagles have compiled an average of 50 points per game on offense, and the Eagles continued to show their offensive prowess Friday against Montgomery.
After the Bears’ abrupt three-and-out early in the first quarter, the Eagles attacked instantly and Robinson III threw a dart to Ta’Von Gwyn to start the drive.
Not long after, Robinson stepped back and delivered a strike that ended up in the hands of Jayden Smith to put the Eagles’ first points on the board.
Montgomery (2-1) answered quickly and got on the board twice after two costly three-and-outs by the Eagles and took a 14-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Eagles offense were men on a mission. On the second play of the drive, Robinson delivered another 65-yard dart to Jyaire Shorter for a touchdown, and not too long after that, Robinson threw another 18-yard touchdown to X’Zavier Green.
The Eagles finished the second quarter with another touchdown, with Robinson putting the ball right on the numbers of Shorter, who escaped a tackle and scampered for an 83-yard touchdown.
The Eagles offense could not be stopped in the first half.
Likewise the defense played a pivotal part with standout performances from Jaira Baker and Kipshawn Washington, who recorded an interception to close out the first half.
Going in to the third quarter, the Eagles continued to show their dominance, again scoring a touchdown via the arm of Robinson, who threw another 43-yard pass to Green.
Robinson has thrown 13 TD passes already this season.
Robinson capped the Ellison scoring using his legs to find the end zone on a 13- yard run, extending the lead to 42-14.
Montgomery ended the third quarter by scoring on a 9-yard pass to put a small dent in the lead, making the score 42-21.
Entering the fourth quarter the Bears started to move the ball down the field effectively and finished the drive scoring on another 11-yard run, making the score 42-28.
Montgomery continued is scoring tendencies by scoring again on a 21-yard run cutting the Ellison lead to 42-35 with only three minutes remaining.
Montgomery attempted an onside kick but it was quickly recovered by Ellison’s hands team.
The Eagles’ drive quickly came to a halt and they punted with less than two minutes remaining.
The Montgomery offense’s last chance ended on a failed fourth-down conversion.
The Eagles travel to face Waco University next week.
