GATESVILLE — The Gatesville girls basketball team lost its first game after breaking into the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Class 4A rankings as Waco Connally built an early lead it never relinquished en route to a 46-32 victory Tuesday.
The Lady Cadets held a 12-7 advantage heading into the second quarter and were in control the rest of the way, punctuating the victory with a 17-8 outburst in the fourth quarter.
Allaria Jones led No. 24 Gatesville (16-6, 2-2 District 17-4A) with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double while teammate Rebekah Nolte added eight points and five rebounds.
The Hornets look to bounce back Friday at No. 3 Waco La Vega.
NO. 20 LOMETA 87, CRANFILLS GAP 24: At Cranfills Gap, Ivan Jasso had 16 points and all 12 Hornets players scored in Lometa’s rout.
Adrian Rivera (14 points) and Reid Moore and Kyle Molter (10 each) also scored in double figures for Lometa (18-3, 4-0) 25-1A.
The Hornets outscored Cranfills Gap 31-2 in the opening quarter and led 47-9 at halftime.
“We got off to a good start defensively,” coach Aaron Nuckles said. “That led to a lot of transition buckets for us and kind of jump-started our offense.”
BURNET 77, SALADO 71: At Salado, Drew Kiser led four Bulldogs in double figures with 23 points and Burnet overcame a tremendous effort by Salado’s Preston Rosebrock.
Rosebrock scored 32 points before fouling out, hitting five 3-pointers and making 11 of 14 free throws.
Justin Tatum added 20 points for the Eagles (0-2 25-4A). Peyton Kyburz scored 10.
Burnet (1-1 25-4A) trailed 35-34 at halftime.
ELLISON 2, BROWNWOOD 0: At Brownwood, Alex Lee scored twice, and Michael Charlton helped Ellison record its fourth shutout of the season.
Nathan Krum assisted Lee on his first goal, and Marcell Wright assisted the second. Erik Luna finished the game in goal for the Eagles.
Ellison (4-4-1) is off Friday before hosting Harker Heights to open district play Tuesday.
KILLEEN 5, LAMPASAS 0: At Leo Buckley Stadium, Killeen scored three first-half goals to run away from visiting Lampasas.
Marquel Eiland scored twice for Killeen while Noah Bermea, Luis Carreon and Martin Alba also found the back of the net. Mario De Lucio had two assists in the game, and Omar De La Rocha had one.
Killeen (4-2-2) visits Waco Connally on Friday in its nondistrict finale.
KILLEEN 1, LAMPASAS 0: At Leo Buckley Stadium, Destiny Savini scored late to give the Lady Roos a victory.
Alyssa Cabading assisted on the goal.
Le’Brittany Hodge earned the shutout in goal. Jayln Davis and Taegan Buggeln also contributed to the victory.
