With no seniors on its entire varsity roster, you might expect a team to not have a leader on the volleyball court.
That is not the case at Florence.
The Lady Buffaloes have a leader and a captain in Juana Macedo.
Macedo, a middle blocker, is a fierce competitor with a ton of heart who brings an upbeat attitude to every game — and her teammates feed off her energy.
“Juana is a steady rock,” said Florence first-year head coach Jordan Pinson. “She’s going to come out, she’s going to be positive, she’s going to get the next pass, and she’s going to be there for the rest of her teammates.”
Being the captain on the team, there are certain responsibilities and challenges that come along the way. Macedo wants to be that person who handles those responsibilities.
“I can’t be mad when something doesn’t go my way, because I know that the underclassmen look up to me and I have to set a good example and be their role model on the floor,” Macedo said.
Not every coach has the luxury to have such a special player who sacrifices her own time and makes the effort to help her teammates. Pinson said that is what makes Macedo a special person.
“Juana keeps going and going and continues to reach new heights,” Pinson said. “She has impressed me every day.”
The Lady Buffaloes have struggled early on in District 25-3A play but Macedo feels such a tough league, which features three teams currently ranked in the TGCA Top-25, will only help the Lady Buffs get better and improve during the stretch run.
“Our passing needs to get better and we just need to have better communication on the court, and by playing teams like we have faced early on in district, it gives you confidence to know that you can play with the best,” Macedo said.
The Lady Buffs sit at 12-12 on the year and 0-3 in district play, but feel like it’s only a matter of time before they get hot and get on a nice winning streak.
“There still are plenty of goals this year we want to accomplish,” Macedo said. “We want to go 9-0 from here on out, finish strong, and then hopefully earn a playoff spot.”
