The Florence Lady Buffs volleyball team suffered a 3-1 road loss to Holland on Monday.
All four games were close.
Holland took Game 1 in overtime, 29-27. Florence won Game 2 by the score of 25-22. Holland won Game 3, 25-22, and the final game, 26-24.
“Overall, we played well,” said Florence head coach Kelly Stephens. “We had some big-time plays from the bench tonight. Mackenzie Futrell came in and had four big kills from the back row as well as some great serves. Berenice Ramirez also came off the bench with two clutch serves to win the second set.
“Michaela Meischen also showed what she can do from the setter position. We saw some good plays at the net from Shelbie Long and Peyton Faulkner.”
The Lady Buffs are now 3-6 in 2014. Florence will participate in the Gatesville Tournament beginning on Thursday.
“We need to work on our offense a little bit,” Stephens said. “There were times when we had some opportunities to finish the set against Holland and failed to do so, either by missing a serve or not getting a kill.”
Florence will have five non-district contests from Aug. 26 through Sept. 9. The Lady Buffs begin district play on Friday, Sept. 12 at Blanco.
“We have talked about not being the underdogs anymore,” Stephens said. “About learning to play while we’re ahead instead of always coming from behind and trying to catch up. We also have to learn to finish games. I am looking towards my captains and seniors to help develop the rest of the team into the new version of Florence volleyball.”
