Emily Gray tossed a four-hitter and socked a two-run homer to lift the Florence softball team to a 4-0 win over Boling on Friday in the opener of their best-of-three Class 3A area-round playoff series in Giddings.

Gray struck out 14 and walked two. In the fourth inning, she homered to put the game’s first runs on the board.

Gray finished 2 for 3.

In the fifth, Madison Hill singled, stole second and scored on Lexi Solis’ line-drive single to center. A throwing error allowed Solis (2 for 3) to circle the bases for the game’s final run.

Game 2 in the series is set for 5 p.m. at Giddings. If Boling wins, Game 3 will follow.

Florence improved to 15-7-1.
