SALADO — The Gatesville Hornets got back in the win column Friday at the Salado Coach Smith Memorial Tournament with a fourth-quarter comeback victory over Jarrell behind clutch 3-pointers from Tyler Hallman.

“It really does feel great,” Hallman said of his contribution to the team win. “But not for the reasons you would think.

“Most people want to shoot 3s to be a star, but I just want to help my team.”

The senior forward dropped five of the team’s collective 12 triples, including two to tie the Cougars in the fourth quarter.

“It just feels good to be a part of this team,” Hallman added. “We’re such a tight-knit unit and I can’t imagine being on a different team right now.”

Gatesville trailed Jarrell by just four points at the start of the second quarter, but couldn’t catch up before the break, despite a pair of 3-point shots each by Hallman and Chase Williams.

“I might have got after them at halftime,” said coach Thomas Winkler. “I wasn’t real happy, so I might have made that known.

“I just tried to motivate them and get them to do the things I know they could do. I told them ‘I’m not asking you to do anything you can’t do, I’m not asking you to do anything I haven’t seen you do, I’m just asking you to do the things I’ve seen you do.’”

Those words appeared to ignite the Hornets.

“Coach Winkler fires us up all the time,” Hallman said. “He really knows what to do and he’s a really good coach.

“We want to give him a winning season because we have one guy who is 6-foot,4-inches and everyone else is 6-foot, 2-inches and under, so we really do the best we can for him.”

The Hornets started the second half with a 10-4 run that included Williams and senior Vance Jones each adding another shot from outside the perimeter.

“It’s nice having guys that we know that can step up and knock down shots,” said Winkler said. “It takes some pressure off our point guard and opens up the floor for him a little bit more.

“And we’ve had a couple games where we’ve hit a bunch, so it’s been fun so far.”

Jones’ dropped another bucket from the outside to tie the score 38-38 in the middle of the third quarter.

Jarrell senior guard Tagen Adkins stole the ball and sprinted for a layup that quickly put the Cougars back on top.

The Hornets battled back as senior Parker Floyd fought in the post for the rebound and kicked the ball out to the right corner to Hallman for another three points to tie the game once more at 43.

The Cougars answered back with a fadeaway from senior Cash Colbert to regain the lead before heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Jarrell doubled up defensively against senior Tyler Lewis, but that opened up the floor for Jones, who moved the ball up the court and found Hallman waiting in the left corner for a another 3 to tie the score for the third time.

Adkins added three points of his own to push the Cougars ahead 51-48, but Hallman responded with his fifth and final shot from the outside to tie the score for the final time.

The Hornets completed a 12-8 run with the final bucket a layup from Lewis as the buzzer sounded.

“We were kind of down yesterday after, we didn’t really play a real good first half against Salado,” admitted Winkler. “It felt like we played a better second half so we were pretty frustrated about that. So to be able to come in today and get a win kind of puts us back up and gets us going again”

Growth is key for the Hornets who look to finish out the tournament today with their final tournament matchup at 2 p.m. against Cameron.

“One of our goals was to win a tournament,” noted Hallman. “Obviously can’t win it since we lost yesterday, but the further we go, the more progress we make as we get to the next one.”
