In its final nondistrict game before starting 12-6A play Friday, Harker Heights shook off a slow start to knock off visiting Pflugerville Connally in a 56-49 victory on Tuesday.
Junior Sheanne Ellis-Clayton led the Lady Knights with 18 points, but Lady Knight head coach Shirretha Nelson was pleased with the team effort she got as nine Lady Knights scored in the game.
“Overall, I would say we got a lot of people to contribute early on,” Nelson said, “and I think that’s what happened.”
Senior post Da’Jah Daniel was a key contributor again with 10 points, but with most of those coming in the second half, Nelson was happy to see sophomore Angelica Brown step up early and finish with 10 points.
“I think she did a good job,” Nelson said. “She got some shots up in that second and third quarter that were beneficial for us.”
Junior post Brittney Easley also earned Nelson’s praise for her play in the first half while filling in for Daniel.
Nelson wasn’t happy with Harker Heights’ play on defense — attributing the Lady Knights’ turnaround a few adjustments on that end of the floor — but she was very pleased with the offensive effort.
“Because those were all true baskets,” Nelson said. “We shot 11 free throws, but they were literally scoring from the field.”
Now, Harker Heights turns its attention to league play, which it begins Friday at Ellison at 7 p.m.
