Phillip Blackstock scored 14 points and the Lampasas Badgers held off Giddings 50-48 in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Tuesday at East View High School in Georgetown.

Kyle Sims added 12 points for Lampasas (25-9), which will face Waco Connally in the second round. Austin Martin and Bryce Winter each had eight points.

The Badgers led almost the entire way — including by nine at halftime and 11 early in the second half — but had to rely on their defense down the stretch as the Buffaloes cut the lead to two with 2 minutes remaining.

Sims hit a pull-up jumper to keep Giddings at bay. During one stretch, the Buffaloes missed three straight 3-pointers.

“We did a good job of challenging the shots on the perimeter,” said Lampasas coach Aaron Nuckles, who won his playoff debut in his first season at his alma mater.

Giddings missed two shots at the end, including a putback try at the buzzer.

The Badgers have won a playoff opener in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 17 years.
