ELM MOTT — Copperas Cove IMCA Southern SportMod driver Taylor Florio was the sanction’s Rookie of the Year in 2015 while still in high school. Friday night, the recent Lampasas grad hit another career milestone, and when the checkered flag waved for her after Friday’s SportMod feature at Heart O’ Texas Speedway, none of the boys seemed too upset over losing to a girl, either.

Florio started third in a 16-car lineup and took the lead on lap six of a 20-circuit race after passing Mart driver D.L. Wilson. She paced the field for 12 laps when a caution flag for a spun car stopped the race with two circuits to go.  lorio weathered the green-white-checker restart and pulled in to Victory Lane with her first career feature race win, earning a huge ovation from the fans, plus numerous handshakes and hugs from competitors.
