Nate Borchardt scored 16 points, Elijah Stanley added 11 and the Lampasas Badgers opened the season with a 58-35 home rout of Rosebud-Lott on Saturday.

The Badgers took command early, limiting the Cougars to two points in the opening quarter. The Badgers led 23-10 at halftime.

It was a solid start for a Lampasas team that will add significant firepower when Michael Murray Jr., Jaylon Porter, Brenton Webb and Ethan Rascoe join the squad following the sixth-ranked football team’s run through their postseason.

Three Badger sophomores — Borchardt, Quinn Pace (nine points) and Jett Bramon (eight) — accounted for 33 of the team’s points. Without the football players, Borchardt and Bramon are the team’s only varsity returning players.

“We’ve got a good, young group to work with,” said Lampasas coach Aaron Nuckles, who won a season opener for the first time with the Badgers and his first in four years.

The Badgers begin a monthlong road on Tuesday at Llano. They won’t play again at home until Dec. 17.

John Reyna led Rosebud-Lott with 13 points.

Host Cove girls win Bush's Classic

Deja Chapman led the Lady Dawgs with 11 points and nine rebounds Saturday and Copperas Cove won its own Bush's Classic tournament, topping Leander Rouse 44-27 in the championship game.

The teams played to a 16-16 tie in the first half.

Keanna Garrett contributed eight points and three steals for Cove, which won all five of their games in the nine-team tourney and improved to 7-0.

Livonna Wallace scored seven points. Leah Powell added six points and six rebounds.

Kaysha McCloud, whose performances were highlighted by a 27-point, 16-rebound effort in a 54-35 win over Manor, was named tourney MVP. Chapman and Madisen Jean Honea were also selected to the all-tournament team.

Belton edged Brenham 43-39 in overtime in the fifth-place game.

Nylah Modeste led Belton (3-4) 13 points. McKenna Maddux, who added 10, was named to the all-tourney team.
