SALADO — The Salado Lady Eagles had quite the weekend.
After a tough loss to Thorndale on Thursday afternoon, head coach Diane Konarik rallied her players.
The team picked up three straight wins to finish the Coach Smith Tournament, including an impressive 44-29 win over McGregor on Saturday.
After a nip-and-tuck first quarter, in which both teams remained tied at 6, the Lady Eagles put up 14 second-quarter points to lead at halftime 20-17.
Sarah Kate Kelarek had three critical baskets in the quarter for Salado.
Kelarek led the Lady Eagles with a team-high 10 points.
Not to be outdone, McGregor’s Kylie Smith had herself quite the half.
The senior scored 10 first-half points, including three 3-pointers from behind the arc.
In the second half, the Lady Eagles puzzled the Lady Bulldogs with their pressure in the backcourt and limited the touches by Smith.
After dominating the first half, Smith did not record a single point in the second half.
Salado (5-6) dominated the third quarter, outscoring McGregor (3-5) 13-4 to take a 33-21 lead.
Salado senior Kerrigan Hearne scored in double figures in all four games, finishing with a total of 46 points, including a 10-point outing against McGregor.
As a team, the Lady Eagles were 9 of 16 from the charity stripe.
Kayla Manning proved to be a force in the paint. She scored seven points in the contest. Taylor Lowrance and Lexie Lima scored six points apiece.
Katelyn Seymour, Ashlen LaCanne and Kate Kyburz all played roles in the Lady Eagles’ success this weekend.
Robinson went 4-0 and won the girls side of the bracket.
The Salado (4-3) boys fell 54-44 to 3A-No. 23 Jarrell on Saturday afternoon.
Kenny Mann’s squad finished the tournament 2-2 and got contributions from Ryan Kyburz, Evan Wall, Jackson Arredondo, Quade Brown, Jake Pittman, Trevor Stump, Kade Maedgen, Jeremy Jarvis, Willy Whigham and Anthony Young.
Jarrell (6-0) finished the tournament 4-0 to win the boys’ bracket.
