BELTON — Shane Stafford made a mid-season adjustment. It is paying off now.

Stafford arguably had his best outing of the season on Tuesday, tossing a one-hitter as Belton rolled past Killeen 15-0 in a District 8-5A game at Tiger Field. Stafford needed just 54 pitches over five innings, striking out four while allowing one walk. Killeen’s lone hit was an infield single by Darien Cox to lead off the third inning.

Belton coach Eddie Cornblum said Stafford was somewhat erratic in mid-season but has returned to form recently. It was the first start for Stafford (4-0) since a 21-2 win over Killeen on March 22, but it also followed him throwing three scoreless innings to help preserve a 9-6 win over Austin Anderson in a non-district game on Saturday. Stafford was quick to praise his defense that had an error-free game.

Belton (18-10-1, 11-1 8-5A) remained on a collision course with Waco Midway for a showdown for the district title. Midway plays at Belton on April 26 in the regular-season finale for both teams. Killeen (4-18-1, 3-9) was eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.
