TEMPLE — Temple scored early and held on late to pick up its second win of the season and more importantly its second District 8-5A win, a 5-2 victory over Ellison on Friday night at Hallford Field.

Freshman Dylan Cheek (1-2) pitched the complete game, scattering seven hits.

Temple (2-12) evened its district record at 2-2.

“I was really proud of the way the kids came out today and played. They had great energy,” Wildcats head coach Craig Martin said.

Temple got on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single by Hunter Torrez and got two more in the second. With runners on second and third, Chase Truelove hit a hard grounder to the shortstop that scored Cheek from third. Ellison shortstop Sam Weston’s throw to first was low, allowing Keion Seastrunk to score from second and putting Temple up 3-0.

The Wildcats got another run in the third on an RBI single by Seastrunk to make it 4-0. They made it 5-0 in the fourth after Truelove led off the inning with a triple then scored on a groundout by Reid Hesse.

The Eagles finally got on the board in top of the fifth. With runners on first and third, designated hitter Anthony Spencer hit a hard liner that Hesse couldn’t handle at second, allowing Chris Ackles to score. Temple escaped the inning without any further damage as Ellison left the bases loaded.

The Eagles got another run in the top of the sixth. Angelo Rodriguez scored from second when third baseman Travis Lock fielded an Ackles grounder but threw wildly to first.

But again Cheek managed to get out of the inning without any further damage, with Ellison leaving runners on first and third.

“I thought Dylan did a great job,” Martin said. “I thought he got a little bit rattled in the fifth and sixth, but he’s a freshman and he’s played his butt off for us all year long and he keeps improving every game.”
