Temple boys basketball coach quits after first season

Marty Garcia said he doesn’t know what’s next — just that it was time to follow a new path.

Garcia confirmed Wednesday he resigned Friday after one season as the head boys basketball coach at Temple.

“I’m just moving on to different educational endeavors,” Garcia said. “It was a personal decision, a personal choice.”

Temple went 9-19 overall under Garcia this season, including a 3-11 District 8-5A record. The Wildcats only finished ahead of rival Belton in the district standings.

Garcia declined to comment on his only season with Temple. He spent the five previous years as the athletic coordinator and head girls basketball coach at Class 4A Saginaw.

Garcia said he didn’t have another job yet but said he was ready to enjoy the next chapter of his life.

“My family and I, we’re going to enjoy this time,” he said. “And, like I said earlier, we’re going to pursue new educational endeavors.”

Temple athletic director Mike Spradlin was not available to comment on Garcia’s resignation or when the open position will be posted.
