TEMPLE — Taylor Ward singled up the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning, sending the Temple Tem-Cats to a 5-4 win over Belton on Friday.

Belton (16-10) lost its first District 8-5A game after winning nine straight.

Lexi Smith struck out 14 in the win for Temple (11-13, 7-3).

It was the last district meeting for the next-door rivals for at least two years. The Tem-Cats are dropping in classification next season.

ROGERS 3, FLORENCE 1: At Rogers, Florence was unable to make up an early deficit as Rogers pulled out a close win.

Rogers went up 2-0 in the second before the Lady Buffaloes (8-10, 3-7) pulled within one an inning later. But Rogers didn’t allow Florence to score again.

Madison Hill had a double, and McKenzie Futrell drove in the Lady Buffaloes’ lone run. Emily Gray struck out seven for Florence, which visits Cameron Yoe on Tuesday.

KILLEEN 11, SHOEMAKER 9: At Killeen, McKenzie Alexander was the winning pitcher in Killeen’s Friday night win.

“Chani Burnett was 3 for 4 and played great defensively in center field,” said Killeen head coach Randy James. “Amanda Daniels did a great job behind the plate and went 2 for 4 batting. Maribel Carrizales had two hits, and Taylor Smith, Asia Hill, Holly Crostwaite, and Gabby McLeish-Yarborough added hits.”
